Tips for Space Heater Safety

Each year in the U.S., thousands of home fires are caused by heating units like space heaters. Sadly, many of those fires result in personal injuries and deaths. While portable space heaters can provide a cozy amount of heat in a small space, they also pose a large electrical risk and can cause terrible home damage.

Safety is a top priority when using portable space heaters so we’ve compiled a list of tips to consider when using one.

1. Choose a Reliable Manufacturer

Always opt for space heaters manufactured by reputable companies to ensure high-quality and safety standards.

2. Maintenance Checks

Perform routine checks on your space heater. Avoid using units with cracked components, exposed or frayed wires, or broken plugs. Any signs of wear and tear should prompt immediate attention.

3. Proper Placement

Maintain a safe distance of at least 3 feet between the space heater and anything that can potentially catch fire, such as curtains, furniture, or bedding. Never use space heaters to warm or dry clothes.

4. Direct Plug-In

Steer clear of using power strips or extension cords with space heaters. Plug the heater directly into a wall outlet to prevent overloading circuits and reducing the risk of electrical fires.

5. Never Leave Unattended

Avoid leaving a space heater unattended, especially overnight. Always turn it off when you leave the room, and never leave it running for an extended period.

By adhering to these safety tips, you can enjoy the warmth and comfort provided by your space heater while minimizing the risks associated with its use. Remember, safety should always be the top priority.
