Ground Fault Circuit Interupters for electrical safety
Guard against accidental electrocution with Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters
Simply put, a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (also referred to as GFI) is a device that prevents accidental
electrocution. Sensing that something (or very likely someone) has
interrupted, say, the circuit your blow dryer is on , your GFI immediately
senses the accidental grounding and
trips the circuit before the current is strong enough to cause injury.
A GFI can be in the form of either a circuit breaker or
receptacle (outlet). For protection of all outlets on one circuit, a GFI
circuit breaker is used. To protect a particular outlet, a GFCI receptacle is
used (which also protects all “downstream” receptacles on the circuit).
The National Electric Code (NEC) requires all
residential bathrooms since 1971 to have GFI circuits and outlets. Since 2011,
the list has expanded to include these important locations:
- Kitchen appliances
- Spas, hot tubs & swimming pools
- Garage circuits
- Outdoor circuits
- Fountains
- and many more...
Don't interrupt electricity. Be safe. We can inspect your home (at no charge) and determine where you should have Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters installed.
